Spirited Architecture

We offer a bespoke business planning, design and development service for prospective artisan and craft distillers from initial concept through to first spirit production.

Experts in design & construction and the distillation process, we are inspired by the Speyside landscape that surrounds us. With panoramic views across the glen to Ben Rinnes ( known by some as whisky mountain ) with 18 whisky distilleries on its lower flanks, the aroma of distilled malt quite literally fills the air. With a heritage that stretches back hundreds of years, the craftsmanship and provenance of spirit production forms the unique character of this part of the Highlands.

The craft distillery industry is booming. We have recently finished work for Ballindalloch Single Estate Distillery in Speyside and for The Cotswold Distilling Company in England. We are currently in consultation with clients looking to develop whisky, rum and gin distilleries across the UK. We are also in discussion with a client further afield about a whiskey distillery overseas.

Craft Distillery Case Studies

Ballindalloch Single Estate Distillery

Designed by renowned architect Lachlan Stewart, we were instructed as project manager across the 4 different sites working alongside local coppersmiths and pipe fitters installing the craft distillery equipment & vessels as well as local craftsmen and stonemasons restoring the steading to its former glory.

CDDC were responsible for on site technical design & detailing at the distillery & visitors centre and water storage facility; also principal design, planning and building warrant submission of the bonded warehouses at Marypark; interior design of the visitors centre and all design aspects of the external works at all sites.

Glen Quaich Distillery

CDDC were instructed in June 2016 to oversee the design and development of the buildings on the site at the former Amulree Hotel to form a new craft distillery and visitors centre for production of a premium single malt Scotch whisky and London dry gin. The brief outlined the specific restoration of the two distinct buildings; the hotel building and the stable/garage building. The former hotel building will house the Visitor Venue with coffee shop and restaurant, retail outlet, brand immersion and tasting rooms. The old stable and garage building will be restored and refurbished to house the new craft distillery equipment and vessels.

The Hoylake Distillery

In Spring 2017 CDDC were instructed to re-design the buildings at 1 Carr Lane to form the proposed new Hoylake Distillery for the production of a premium English Whisky and Caribbean style spiced Rum. The brief outlined the specific conversion of the existing building; the warehouse and ground and first floor offices into the new craft distillery and visitor venue. The former first floor studio/office will house the visitor venue including retail outlet, brand immersion and tasting room. The warehouse building will be converted to house the new craft distillery equipment and associated vessels as well as the new bonded warehouse for spirit maturation.

Craft Distillery Development

For over 25 years years we have successfully honed a design and development ethos that has produced fresh, intelligent, high quality and sustainable developments. That includes our most recently completed projects at Ballindalloch Distillery and The Cotswolds Distilling Company.

If you are a 'Spirited Entrepreneur' with conviction to develop your own craft distillery, new build or refurbishment, large or small and are seeking attractive, quality and sustainable design with an efficient use of development funds, we will be able to help you achieve your goal.
